You plan ahead and do some research on your destination, only to discover a travel warning has been put in place for a country on your itinerary. What do you do? Do you travel anyway? Is it dangerous? Will you need to claim on your trip cancellation insurance? And is your trip cancellation insurance even valid?
According to advice from the USDOS, United States Department of State, the US may put a travel advisory in place to say Americans shouldn’t travel to a certain country. A travel warning is one step further and it says that all staff at the Department of State in that country should leave as soon as possible.
You should register with the US Department of State before you travel so you are kept up to date with warnings prior to your trip. If you are already in the country, you can register with your embassy there.
When travelling, keep current by watching local TV and reading local newspapers. This will keep you in touch with what is happening in the country. Make sure you let your family and friends know what’s going on by sending regular updates.
