Earthquake and Tsunami Strike Japan

March 15, 2011 by Lou C

Japan was struck by the most powerful earthquake the country has experienced since records began. The 8.9-magnitude quake hit the north-east coast near Tokyo and triggered a 10 foot-high wave that swept away houses, cars, ships and people.

A state of emergency was declared after the quake struck at 14.46 local time and alerts are warning people in such countries as the United States, Chile, China and Indonesia. Japan begins the terrible task of clearing up in the face of severe aftershocks.

The frequency of natural disasters like this makes it all the more important to take out trip cancellation insurance. When you can’t travel to your dream destination you lose all the upfront money you paid – for hotel reservations, tours, and transport.

While experts struggle to predict when and where the next big earthquake will strike, you can be personally prepared in your travel plans. Trip cancellation insurance won’t make you feel any better about the tragedy but it will look after the financial details of your own vacation.

Preparations for Your Trip: Gas and Electricity

May 7, 2012 by Lou C

Save yourself from last minute panics, and the risk of missing your flight, by making your preparations to leave in advance of the leaving day itself. Of course, there are certain things you can only do on the day of your vacation (like locking the doors and windows) but some tasks can be completed or planned in advance. When you buy travel insurance for your trip, consider taking out trip cancellation insurance. If you are covered with trip cancellation insurance you can claim back the cost of prepaid expenses if something happens to prevent you taking your trip as planned.

One of the most important things to sort out before you leave is the gas. If you have natural gas in your home for cooking or heating, or gas appliances, you need to be careful and make sure they are safe while you are away. If you can, shut off the gas supply to every appliance. If you can’t do it individually, shut off the gas from the main supply tank or meter.

Electricity is the next important consideration. You cannot switch off the electricity at the mains if you want to continue to run a freezer or a fridge. (If you are travelling for several weeks or longer than a month, consider emptying the fridge and possibly the freezer so you can defrost them both and have them out of action while you are away.) If you don’t turn the electricity off at the mains, unplug each individual appliance. A small spark could cause a fire if these appliances are plugged in. You don’t need them to be plugged in when you’re not there, so it is worth the extra effort to unplug everything.

Check your water pipes before leaving. Turn off the mains water supply, particularly if it is wintertime and there is a risk of pipes freezing and bursting. You don’t want to come home to a flooded basement or living room.

Preparations For Your Trip: Burglar-Proof

April 30, 2012 by Lou C

A vacation requires some pre-planning and you’ll probably find yourself with a long list of things to do to your home before you can board your flight. Some of the most common causes of missed trips and delays on the way to the airport are home-related. One thing to put on your to-do list as you prepare for your trip is to purchase trip cancellation insurance. Think how upset you’d be if you lost the money you paid for your cruise, or your flight, because you couldn’t take your trip due to a burglary or an unexpected illness. Trip cancellation insurance refunds pre-paid deposits and non-refundable payments if you can’t travel as planned.

Before you leave your home for a vacation, be prepared to complete many tasks that will keep your house safe and secure while you are away. One thing to think about if you are going away for any length of time is how to make it look like you are still at home – don’t advertise to burglars that you are away and won’t be back for some time. Get a neighbor to pick up your mail for you, and take the garbage cans back in once the truck has been. Put your lights on a timer system so that come on in the evening for a few hours. If you have curtains it’s best to leave them closed so that it won’t look so obvious in the evening that you are not home. If you have blinds, close them only partially.

Cut the grass and tidy the yard immediately before you go away so it won’t get overgrown while you have gone. If you are away for a long period, hire a gardener or ask a friend to come round and clear the yard, trim grass and water plants so your garden doesn’t advertise that you are away on vacation. If you don’t want neighbors or friends going in your house while you are away to water plants, keep them all together in a bathtub which has water in the bottom and the plug in.

If you have a home alarm that isn’t monitored, ask a trusted neighbor to call the police if they hear the alarm. If your alarm is monitored, notify the company before you leave that you are on vacation and give an alternative telephone number for them to call if there is a problem.

Preparations for Your Trip – Food and Electricals

April 23, 2012 by Lou C

When you are planning a vacation that’s going to last more than a few days you’re sure to have a long list of tasks to sort out. What’s on your ¨to do¨ list before you jet off on vacation to the Caribbean, or start out on your tour of the Canadian Rockies? Good preparation makes for a less stressful trip because there is less risk of things going wrong at home while you are away. The first thing you need to sort out is travel insurance with a trip cancellation insurance benefit. It’s best to arrange trip cancellation insurance as soon as you book your trip; to make sure you don’t lose out if you need to cancel your vacation.

Next, take a look at the food situation in your house. Remember that if you are going away for more than a weekend the food in your fridge will go bad. Try not to buy too much in the run-up to your vacation, and eat as much as possible so you don’t waste it. If you can’t get through it all, consider donating your unopened packets and containers to a homeless shelter or a Food Bank (there are Food Banks in most major US cities). These organizations will make use of the food so it won’t go to waste while you’re enjoying different cuisine abroad.

Make sure you switch off the fridge if you are going to be away for a while. The freezer will need to be left on, but your food will be vulnerable in the event of a power cut. Give a trusted friend or relative the key to your place and ask that they check round every couple of days to see that everything is OK.

Make sure everything is unplugged before you go away. Leave some lights on a timer so the house doesn’t look completely abandoned but you don’t waste electricity. Make sure external motion sensors and security lights are working well, and inform the security company that you are going away if you have a response-system house alarm.

April 16, 2012 by Lou C

Planning is important before you travel – forward planning helps cut your risk of problems and incidents when you arrive at your destination. Good planning means a less stressful vacation, and one you will remember for all the right reasons. Step one in your plans: make sure you have the travel insurance you need. Travel insurance with trip cancellation insurance benefits is essential.

Next, make sure your visa and passport are suitable for the country you are visiting and up to date. Then register your trip with the US Department of State, which makes it easier for the government to contact you in the event of an emergency.

Research the local conditions, weather, hazards and dangers before you go. Plan where you are going to travel and take note of any warnings about your destinations.

Check to see if you need vaccinations for your destination. Make sure you have all the medication you need to take with you and bring a note from your doctor if the medications may be considered illegal in the country you are visiting.

How Insurance Helps When You’re Delayed

April 5, 2012 by Lou C

Trip cancellation insurance pays you money if you cannot take your trip as planned, for a number of covered reasons. But the protection from trip cancellation insurance doesn’t end there. If you are delayed, you can claim money for unplanned expenses to cover the hassle of waiting for your plane or a connection.

Delays can be highly frustrating. If your flight is delayed many hours, or overnight, you will have to spend money on hotel accommodation, food and transportation. The airline may offer some compensation but you will often have to cover much of the cost out of your own pocket.

When you are delayed and don’t reach your destination in time you can also lose the cost of a night’s accommodation, or miss a pre-paid trip or excursion. If your bags are delayed you need to buy new clothes and essentials while you wait.

Trip cancellation insurance helps with these out-of-pocket expenses that were caused through no fault of your own. Delays are frustrating but with insurance at least you know you are covered.

Does Luggage Space on Flights Matter to You?

April 5, 2012 by Lou C

Leading US airlines are upgrading their overhead luggage bins to give passengers more space for carry-on. Would more space make you choose one airline over another? Or would it encourage you to try to take more stuff? Whatever you choose to pack, make sure you don’t leave travel insurance at home. Missed flights due to luggage problems may be claimable under trip cancellation insurance policies, but it’s best to pack right in the first place.

The airlines are replacing older and straighter luggage bin doors with curved doors, leaving more space inside for carry-on bags. Trying to find a space for your luggage can be frustrating, but are you more likely to choose a plane with more space over an older model?

Many experts say no. The most important consideration when choosing airlines is still price for most people, along with frequent flyer programs.

More luggage space could encourage passengers to try to take more carry-on luggage aboard, which could potentially cause problems for airline desk staff and people whose luggage is turned away. It’s always best to try to travel light, even when you have the space to fill.

How to Prevent Trip Cancellation

March 12, 2012 by Lou C

If you’re looking forward to the vacation of a lifetime, do all you can to make sure you actually take the trip as planned. Unfortunately you will never be able to completely prevent trip cancellation, which is where trip cancellation insurance is useful. Trip cancellation insurance pays back your non-returnable deposits if you need to change your travel plans.

Keep healthy in the run-up to your vacation. If you are run-down and stressed you are more likely to pick up a bug that could prevent you travelling. Improve your immune system with fresh fruit and vegetables, and eat a balanced diet.

Take regular exercise but be careful not to overdo it in the weeks prior to your vacation. You want to workout in order to look good on the beach but you don’t want to damage your back lifting weights or break a foot playing soccer.

Drive safely to the airport. Leave in plenty of time so you don’t have to rush, and make sure you have secured your house properly before you leave. Don’t take dangerous risks because you want to have more time in duty free.
